NASCAR® FeatherLite Modified SeriesNASCAR's Featherlite Modified Series is potentially the best kept secret in racing. Even though it is promoted by the same folks who bring us the Busch, Craftsmen Trucks and Winston Cup series it has never received the kind of attention it deserves in my opinion. If you really love this sport just for the speed and the thrill of it you have got to see one of these events in person. I guarantee you, it will not matter if you have not heard of a single driver in the field - you will be glad you went. Running on tracks ranging from 1/4 mile to the 1 mile at New Hampshire these 2600 pound pocket rockets sport 364 cubic inch engines at 12:1 compression. They put enough power to the ground with their massive Hoosier tires to not only out run the Cup cars at New Hampshire, but they even draft while their doing it. Over the years the modifieds have even made appearances at the 2.5 mile Pocono Speedway; that must have been a site to behold. If you've been a stock car racing fan for long you've seen how class after class of new "cheaper" race cars is started only to morph into faster, lower, lighter - more expensive bullets. Well, that sums up the Modifieds. They still basically resemble the jalopies of the early '60's but they are leading edge and wicked fast. The refinements have never taken a backward step. Richie Evans, Jimmy Spencer, Jerry Cook, Reggie Ruggerio and Ed Flemke are names I have known forever. Their exploits in these cars are the stuff of legend. , geoff, Brett and Todd Bodine, Steve Park and a host of drivers from years past including Ron Bouchard and even Bobby Allison ran the pavement modifieds on their way to Winston Cup. If it ain't
broke Must see? - anywhere they run, but New Hampshire just once. |
